Origin of the Letsoisa Family

The Letsoisa family originates from Matsoiseng Village, near Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape, close to the border of the Free State and the Kingdom of Lesotho.

The earliest known ancestor was a man named Letsoisa. His personal name later became the surname used by his descendants.

Letsoisa's original homestead was located in Matsoiseng Village. The house no longer stands, but its foundation can still be traced in the garden of the property now owned by Moeletsi Letsoisa. His grave is located in the corner of the family graveyard on the same property.

Generation 1: Letsoisa

Letsoisa had three sons:

  1. Baki Letsoisa - eldest son
  2. Ten Letsoisa - middle son
  3. Mochai Letsoisa - youngest son

Ten Letsoisa relocated from Matsoiseng to Mmusong Village, where his branch of the family became established. The ancestral homestead of Mochai Letsoisa is now occupied by Mangena.

Generation 2: Branch of Baki Letsoisa

  1. Souru Letsoisa - eldest son, occupied Baki's homestead
  2. Leoma Letsoisa - relocated to Mokhotlong, Lesotho
  3. Aojane Letsoisa - his stand is now occupied by Tshokela Letsoisa
  4. Makopo Letsoisa - his stand is now occupied by Lekgolokoe Letsoisa

Generation 2: Branch of Ten Letsoisa

Ten Letsoisa relocated from Matsoiseng Village to Mmusong Village, where his branch of the family became established.

Souru Letsoisa had two wives.

  3. Mamotonosi Letsoisa - married and settled at Ntobeng Village
  4. Maleboto Letsoisa - married and settled at Hillside Village
  5. Mamotiki Letsoisa - married and settled at Makhulleng Village

Second Wife: Matumelo
